FOR HIRING A FREELANCERPUBLIC SOURCES ONLY

Hiring a freelancer?
Check the public story first.

A portfolio link and a name are often all you have. Ossary follows those clues across public profiles, project pages and articles, then tells you what the sources say about their work, and what they don’t.

A fictional example

QuestionDoes Mira Example’s portfolio match the GitHub profile she sent?

Cluesgithub.com/mira-example · Mira Example

  • Linked sourceThe GitHub profile lists the portfolio mira.example as its website.
  • Linked sourceThe portfolio describes three shipped design-system projects and links back to the same GitHub account.
  • Probably someone elseA bakery team page shares the name but no detail connects it to the portfolio.
  • Still openNo public source states a current employer.

Start with what you actually want to know

  • “Does this portfolio match the GitHub and LinkedIn profile they sent?”
  • “What public projects has this developer actually shipped?”
  • “Is the agency on this website the same one in the reviews?”

Clues first, then connections

  • The profile or portfolio you were sent, read directly where a public API exists (GitHub, DEV, Stack Overflow, ORCID).
  • Websites and profiles that profile links to, read in full.
  • Other public pages with the same name, sorted into “linked to your clue”, “possible” and “probably someone else”.
  • A timeline of dated public statements, such as account creation and project updates.

A detective with boundaries

  • Read private or locked accounts, messages or member-only pages.
  • Guess where someone lives or works when no public page says so.
  • Use data brokers, credit files or background-check databases.
  • Treat a shared name as proof that two pages describe one person.

Straight answers

Is this a background check?

No. Ossary reads indexed public web pages and explains what they say. It is not a background check and must not be used for employment screening decisions on its own.

Will the freelancer know I looked?

Ossary sends queries to a search provider and reads public APIs. It does not contact the person or log in anywhere.
